NFL Draft: Commanders Trade Up for Kentucky QB Will Levis?

The Washington Commanders could potentially turn the NFL Draft on its head by trading up.

The Washington Commanders find themselves in a unique position heading into the NFL Draft.

With the No. 16 overall pick, Washington may have a chance to trade up for a top player that slides. In Bleacher Report’s article on hypothetical trades Washington can make, the team traded up to the No. 8 pick with the Atlanta Falcons to take Kentucky quarterback Will Levis.

The Commanders gave up the No. 16, 47 and 193 overall picks.

“If the Commanders have any inkling of doubt that Howell may not be the franchise quarterback to build around, perhaps they consider moving up from No. 16 to nab one of the top QBs in the draft class,” Bleacher Report writes. “The Falcons could be looking to trade down, considering they're committing to Desmond Ridder at quarterback, so there may be a match between the two teams.”

Trading up for a quarterback goes against everything head coach Ron Rivera has said so far this offseason. Rivera has all but affirmed that Howell will get his chance to start — even saying that the team isn’t interested in pursuing Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Something would have to change in Rivera, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and general manager Martin Mayhew’s thoughts about Howell. Levis or Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson falling could change the team’s thought process.

Washington is well-positioned to make a big move, and trading up for a quarterback would flip the draft and potentially the organization on its head.
