NFL Mock Draft: Commanders Take Star TE at No. 16?

The latest NFL mock draft has the Washington Commanders taking a tight end in the first round. Is it the right move?
In this story:

The NFL draft is just over a month away, which means mock drafts are flying around, and in NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah's latest Mock, he has the Washington Commanders going offense with pick 16.

But not the way many think.

With clear needs at cornerback and the offensive line despite the additions of Andre Wylie and Nick Gates, Jeremiah has Washington taking Utah stud Dalton Kincaid.

"I wouldn’t rule out a quarterback with this selection, but I love the idea of adding a dynamic tight end to Washington's impressive wide receiving corps," Jeremiah wrote. "I’m excited to see what Sam Howell can do as the starter for the Commanders."

The 6-4, 242-pound tight end has had eight touchdown receptions in back-to-back seasons, and that kind of offensive production is rather appealing. His addition to a Washington offense that already has Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel, and running back Brian Robinson Jr. could make Sam Howell's job as starting quarterback (if he wins the job) a little easier.

What head coach Ron Rivera and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy might like about Kincaid is that his route running, and his speed can be utilized to create mismatches down the field.

Add in his tough catching ability, and suddenly you have a good target for Howell. Also, despite his size, Kincaid possesses great run-after-the-catch ability, which could prove helpful in Bieniemy's offense.

The only knock on Kincaid is his inability to block and hold those blocks long enough for running lanes to open up. Washington has Logan Thomas at the tight-end position, but they may be considering upgrading.

With other positions needing addressing, taking a tight end in the first round isn't all that logical, but adding Kincaid to an offense where Bieniemy is the one calling the shots would excite Commanders' fans.
