NFL Offseason: What Grade Did Commanders Get?

The Washington Commanders had a solid off-season and shored up key needs.

With OTA's beginning today, there's a much clearer picture of what team's accomplished in the off-season.

In Pro Football Focus' off-season grades for every team, they gave the Washington Commanders a B. Among teams in the NFC East, Washington was third. The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles each received A's, while the Dallas Cowboys got a B-.

The biggest question mark for Washington heading into the 2023 offseason was at quarterback. PFF noted that Washington seemed content with Sam Howell as the starter, and because of that, the signing of Jacoby Brissett was an ideal addition.

"Offensive coordinator candidates were prepared for that eventuality, and their free-agent addition of Jacoby Brissett did little to change it," PFF writes. "Brissett, in fact, is the perfect quarterback addition if that is indeed the case — a capable backup or alternative, but nobody’s “Plan A.”'

PFF also liked the signings of offensive lineman Andrew Wylie and cornerback Cameron Dantzler. They also believe Washington's first-round pick, Emmanuel Forbes, can make an immediate impact.

"Andrew Wylie and Cameron Dantzler were solid and quiet depth pieces, which brings us to the draft," PFF writes. "Emmanuel Forbes was a surprise pick, but Forbes has elite tape and his only question mark is weight (172 pounds at his pro day). Forbes finished 2022 with an 87.2 PFF grade and should start from Day 1."

PFF wasn't as high on Washington drafting safety Jartavius Martin in the second round and offensive lineman Ricky Stromberg in the third round, but believe they can see the field early for the Commanders.

In terms of adding to the team, it wasn't a noisy off-season with high-profile additions to the franchise for Washington. But sometimes a quiet off-offseason that addressed team needs is exactly what a team needs to accomplish, and that's what the Commanders did just that.
