Eagles Sign QB Jalen Hurts to Record Extension; Commanders Impact
The NFL is shaken to its core after the quarterback market has once again been reset.
According to NFL Network, the Philadelphia Eagles are signing Jalen Hurts to a record extension for five years worth $255 million. Out of the $255 million, nearly 180 million is guaranteed.
The $51 million average annual value is the most in NFL history and his no-trade clause marks the first time the Eagles have ever given a player full veto power on a deal.
By signing Hurts to a record contract, the gap between the elite quarterbacks and the rest of the field widens a little bit more. It's perhaps a big reason why the Washington Commanders neglected to sign a big free agent this offseason and instead are hoping second-year pro Sam Howell works out for them.
This is the absolute opposite strategy the Commanders are trying to implement. They want to spend as little as possible on the quarterback at the moment in order to sign their biggest non-QB free agents. We've seen that in the past few offseasons with extensions for Jonathan Allen, Terry McLaurin and Daron Payne.
Hurts' extension goes into effect at the beginning of the 2024 season after his rookie deal expires, so this is a big year for the Eagles in their championship hopes. The amount of money they will be able to spend on positions outside of the quarterback is more now than it will be for the next five years, so Philadelphia is really hoping to make some noise this season and hoist that Lombardi Trophy.
The Commanders will be in the thick of things with the Eagles, hoping to stunt their playoff hopes in the NFC East.
