'The Process!' Commanders Hire 4-Time NBA Champion Bob Myers; What's His Role?
ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Commanders were expected to be busy Monday morning with the termination of coach Ron Rivera looming.
That move was in fact made Monday morning, but the Commanders weren't done as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported shortly after that the franchise was making a key hire that nobody saw coming.
"Sources: The #Commanders are hiring one of the best in sports, luring 2-time NBA Executive of the Year Bob Myers to the NFL to help run their franchise," Rapoport tweeted. "Bombshell. A 4-time NBA champ, Myers built the #Warriors dynasty before stepping down to work in TV. Now he lands in the NFL."
There does seem to be some conflicting info, though, regarding exactly what it is Myers (and former NFL GM Rick Spielman, also on board) will be doing here.
Is this a group of "consultants" who will join Harris and Magic Johnson in a coach search? Or is Myers taking a full-time job here?
Myers is credited with helping build the NBA's Golden State Warriors into one of the more dominant franchises in recent memory and won four championships in his time in that league.
He stepped down in May of 2023 as his contract was expiring and joined ESPN as an analyst beginning in October.
"I think my answer to that would be not right now," Myers said when asked if he would want to lead another NBA team at the time. "I can't say. The only conviction that I have is that I was done with what that job required. And what that will mean in two years, three years, I just honestly don't know."
Commanders Fire Rivera, Hire NBA Exec To Launch Coach Search; 5 Questions
Turns out it took less than one year for Myers to find a new challenge, and now he'll join Washington managing partner Josh Harris in an effort to restore this NFL franchise to its former glory - one that Harris grew up rooting for.
It's not quite 'The Process' made famous by the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, but it's an outside-the-box move that has already created a buzz as the Commanders take their first big step toward reshaping the organization.
