Sam Howell vs. Jacoby Brissett: Who Wins Commanders' QB Battle?

The Washington Commanders have an important question to answer at quarterback.
In this story:

With OTA's set to begin today, multiple position battles will begin to unfold for the Washington Commanders

However, none will be more important than what happens at quarterback for Washington.

Sam Howell seems like the odds on favorite to win the job, especially after the Commanders opted not to draft a quarterback pursue Derek Carr or Lamar Jackson during free agency.

The addition of Jacoby Brissett, who is more than capable of starting, will push Howell and could play himself into the starting role

Bleacher Report predicts that Howell would win the job.

"Make no mistake, the Washington Commanders want Sam Howell to be the team's starting quarterback when they face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1," Bleacher Report writes. "Washington has been talking up the second-year pro ever since he started last season's finale against the Dallas Cowboys."

Howell was taken in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and won his lone start of the season on Jan. 8 against the Dallas Cowboys.

However, Bleacher Report also noted that Brissett is capable of becoming the Commanders starting quarterback if Howell doesn't live up to expectations. Brissett started 11 games and threw for 2,608 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions for the Cleveland Browns

"Brissett made 11 starts for the Cleveland Browns last year, completing 64 percent of his passes and throwing twice as many touchdowns as interceptions," Bleacher Report writes. "If Howell falters and starts making poor decisions with the ball on the practice field, Brissett will quickly be nipping at his heels."

It's clear that Washington wants Howell to be the franchise's starting quarterback when the 2023 season begins. A lot of people's fate's are riding on the second-year quarterback's performance.

If Howell doesn't assert himself as the offseason progresses, it could spell trouble for Washington.
