Sam Howell vs. Jacoby Brissett? Commanders QB Battle 'Settled,' Claims Jahan Dotson

"I think we got our quarterback situation settled," Commanders receiver Jahan Dotson says. "I think Sam Howell's gonna be our guy."
In this story:

We're not quite sure who took off for offseason summer vacation and left Jahan Dotson in charge. But the Washington Commanders info he is offering is appreciated ... even if his coach doesn't completely agree.

Ron Rivera and the Commanders have insisted that they have an open quarterback competition as they ready for training camp. And maybe that is a wise approach.

But Dotson is suggested that it's not an accurate approach.

During an appearance on "The Jim Rome Show," Dotson was asked about the competition between second-year QB Sam Howell and newcomer veteran Jacoby Brissett. Dotson's answer is a pointed one.

"I think we got our quarterback situation settled," Dotson said. "I think Sam Howell's gonna be our guy."

Howell appeared in just one game last season as a rookie, but he did look solid in making a Week 18 start in a 26-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys. The keyword for him might be "upside." Meanwhile, the journeyman Brissett is well-traveled with a track record that suggests that he is more than capable as a backup. So his keyword might be "insurance."

And we do that that was the original plan this offseason for a Washington franchise that has literally been without a high-level and long-term star QB - incredibly! - for the last 50 years. (Hello, Joe Theismann!)

Even so, Rivera has spoke of being open-minded about who might win a job that Dotson is telling us has already been won.

"I think Jacoby has shown us some things that have really gotten people's attention," Rivera said. "We talk about Jacoby almost as much as we talk about Sam. So I just think as we go through this process and until we play games, it'd be unfair to start making assessments. But again, there is a lot of confidence."

But, countered Dotson, talking on Howell: "I have complete faith in him. He makes throws look super effortless on the field. He's been a great leader. He's learning how to lead an NFL offense. ... So I'm super excited for him. I can't wait to make plays for him."
