Commanders Get 'Better QB Play' Under Eric Bieniemy?
The Washington Commanders quarterback room last season was a revolving door as Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke both tried their hand at steering the ship.
Wentz (2-5) and Heinicke (5-3-1) showed glimpses but nothing more, and the moves were made in the offseason to part ways with both and have Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett going forward.
With the offense under Scott Turner up-and-down, now with Howell who has Eric Bieniemy calling plays, many are bullish on what Washington could do offensively.
But will the output be better? ESPN's Seth Walder thinks so.
"It's basically impossible to tell what the Commanders have in Howell statistically," Walder wrote. "But for whatever it's worth, Howell recorded a QBR of 46 over his tiny sample of 29 action plays, which was better than the team's average of 39. Whether it's via Howell or Jacoby Brissett, Washington should get better play at quarterback."
While it could be seen as low-hanging fruit that Howell, with an offensive mind like Bieniemy in his ear to play better than Turner's 24th-ranked offense for points scored (just 18.9 per game), Howell did show promise in the Week 18 win over the Dallas Cowboys last season.
That now needs to translate into consistent play, as Howell is likely to be the team's starter...at least for the beginning of the season.
All the eggs are in Howell's basket as head coach Ron Rivera has nailed his colors to the second-year quarterback's mast, and with Bieniemy's offensive wizardry likely putting Howell and the offense in better spots, optimism is high.
But will the production be better than Wentz and Heinicke? It's hard to see how it won't be.
