Washington Commanders Draft Rumors: Caleb Williams Falling to No. 2 Overall?
Head coach Dan Quinn is changing the culture of the Washington Commanders, and come April 25, general manager Adam Peters will select the face of that change at the NFL Draft.
One player who has been linked to the Commanders in mock drafts and could find himself being the next face of the franchise is USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
Surprisingly, in a recent mock draft, Williams fell to the Commanders at No. 2 overall, despite widely being considered a lock to go No. 1 ever since winning the Heisman trophy as a sophomore in 2022.
“As of now, Caleb Williams is a massive favorite to become the No. 1 overall pick.
But here, Williams is still available for the Commanders because his status as QB1 isn't a foregone conclusion,” Bleacher Report writes. "Williams is a slippery, explosive athlete with mind-bending arm talent and all the confidence in the world to wield it. The accuracy to all three levels and pocket management from Williams are top-tier stuff."
If Williams were to land with the Commanders, he could find comfort in the team’s offense thanks to the team’s new offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury. Last season, Kingsbury was Williams’ offensive coordinator at USC, a season that saw him post the highest pass efficiency rating of his collegiate career.
In addition to Williams being familiar with Washington’s coaching staff, Williams was born and raised in D.C., and getting drafted to the Commanders would represent a homecoming.
Whether or not Williams’ homecoming in Washington takes place is just weeks away from being revealed in Detroit at the NFL Draft.
