Kansas City Chiefs Sign QB Carson Wentz; Washington Commanders Ex Joins Patrick Mahomes

Former Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz is joining Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Carson Wentz just fell up the stairs, as the Kansas City Chiefs are signing the failed former first-round QB to a one-year deal, according to colleague Jordan Schultz. He'll replace Blaine Gabbert as the Chiefs' No. 2 signal-caller. ... but more importantly, he'll work behind Patrick Mahomes for the defending Super Bowl champs.

Wentz, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, sat on the couch for much of last season before eventually signing with the Rams in November. There, due to injuries to Matthew Stafford, Wentz started the regular-season finale and tossed two TD passes in a win over the the San Francisco 49ers.

Before that, of course, Wentz spent the 2022 season with the Washington Commanders after playing for the Colts in 2021. Indianapolis traded for Wentz in an awful deal with Philadelphia as the Eagles moved on to Jalen Hurts as the starter. Washington - which is back in the market looking for a QB at the top of this NFL Draft - also took a stab at fixing Wentz.

In fairness to Wentz, in his second season back in 2017, he was playing well for Philly before he sustained a knee injury. But the former North Dakota State star, now 31, seemed to lose confidence along the way ...

But now gets a chance to reinvent himself in Kansas City.
