Commanders Ex Carson Wentz 'Best Option' to Replace Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo?

The Las Vegas Raiders may need a quarterback and former Washington Commanders signal caller Carson Wentz is available.

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz remains without a team for the 2023 season, but there might be a fit for him with the Las Vegas Raiders.

During Jimmy Garoppolo's initial physical examination with the Raiders, it was discovered that his foot injury from last year required surgical intervention. As a result, Las Vegas included an addendum in his contract worth $72.8 million over three years, allowing the team to part ways without any financial implications if the foot injury hampers his ability to play.

This means the Raiders may need to keep the phone numbers of a quarterback or two, and Wentz fits the bill.

"If the Raiders have to look elsewhere, free agent Carson Wentz would seem to be the best option," ESPN wrote on Thursday. "Raiders pass game coordinator Scott Turner has experience with Wentz as the Washington Commanders' offensive coordinator last season, for what it's worth."

Wentz was cut by the Commanders in February, but has done his best to stay in shape while looking for a new team. His lone season with the team proved to be challenging, as he started in seven games and ended with a disappointing record of 2-5. Throughout the season, Wentz amassed 1,755 passing yards, along with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

However, Wentz could provide an upgrade compared to the current options behind Garoppolo on the Las Vegas depth chart. The alternatives consist of Brian Hoyer, Chase Garbers, and fourth-round draft pick Aidan O'Connell.

The decision to sign Garoppolo was a calculated risk for the Raiders, considering the contract provisions that allowed them to terminate it quickly. However, their potential oversight lies in the failure to secure a suitable contingency plan. Securing Wentz could change that.
