Commanders' Chase Young 'Practicing' Despite Week 1 Uncertainty
Coach Ron Rivera is determined to keep the Washington Commanders' injury concerns in-house.
One of the players whose status remains uncertain for the Commanders' season opener against the Arizona Cardinals is Chase Young.
The 24-year-old defensive end hasn't played an entire season since his rookie year. He sustained a devastating knee injury the following season, where he left the Week 10 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a torn ACL and ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee
"The guy's practicing, doing everything we need him to do right now as he's getting ready for the opener," Rivera said. "No idea what the doctor's going to do, but I do know right now that he's told him he can continue to progress and get himself ready to go.
"Until then, there's nothing that we can tell you. Nothing we can say. We'll have the medical report come out on Wednesday."
In his first two seasons before the injury, Young was on the trajectory of becoming one of the best defensive linemen in the league. In his first 24 games, the former Defensive Rookie of the Year Winner recorded 70 tackles, 9.0 sacks, six force fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
He appeared in Washington's final three games in 2022. Young went the entire training camp period without a knee brace.
Young hopes to make his 2023 debut when the Commanders host the Arizona Cardinals at FedEx Field in the season opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 10.
