The Washington Commanders (1-0) got the preseason off to a winning start, defeating the Cleveland Browns (0-1) in a 17-15 affair.

While there were many storylines to watch for during the game, perhaps the biggest one was the quarterback battle between Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett.

Both had their time in the sun as Howell (9 of 12 for 77 yards, 1 touchdown) and Brissett (6 of 10 for 75 yards and an interception) both showed glimpses.

With that being said, how did the quarterbacks feel about their first outing in Eric Bieniemy's offense?

“It was good to get out here in a new system,” Howell said via the Commanders' post-game show. “I thought the communication was good, EB did a really good job. There were a lot of things I was proud of tonight.

“I felt good, I knew the plays we were going to call, we kind of keep it simple in the preseason and I felt really good about the plays. I felt like I did a good job from an execution standpoint. I went into the game with a lot of confidence and I think my comfortability showed.”

Howell looked comfortable in the offense as he moved the chains consistently after a rough start as he connected with Jahan Dotson for a 26-yard touchdown strike.

Now we get to Brissett.

For many, the backup to Howell, but the competition isn't finished as Brissett showed some good signs in his new surroundings which was highlighted by a 32-yard dime to Byron Pringle in the second quarter.

For Brissett, he liked his first outing as a Commander.

“It was good, hearing a lot of the fans cheering, that was awesome,” Brissett said via the Commanders' post-game show. “[I] felt good about everything, coming in, team finding a way to get a win in the first preseason game. Felt like we did a lot of nice things, but obviously a lot of things to clean up.”

With one preseason game in the books, attention will now turn to the Commanders' second game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The quarterback battle is still up for grabs with both Howell and Brissett making their case for the job against the Browns.
