Commanders Cut DB Bobby McCain; What's Next?

Bobby McCain spent two seasons with the Washington Commanders. Now, he'll look for a new home.
In this story:

The Washington Commanders are making changes to their secondary today.

According to ESPN, the team is cutting defensive back Bobby McCain.

McCain, who turns 30 this offseason, played in every game for Washington in each of the past two seasons. In 2021, McCain recorded a career-high four interceptions and in 2022, he posted a career-high in tackles with 76.

By cutting McCain, the Commanders are saving $4.42 million towards the cap this offseason.

Cutting McCain also allows younger players lower on the depth chart a chance to rise during the offseason. The team selected Percy Butler in the fourth round and Christian Holmes in the seventh in last year's draft and picked up Tariq Castro-Fields in free agency shortly before the start of the season after he was cut in training camp by the San Francisco 49ers.

There's a good chance McCain could be replaced by a veteran free agent, but whoever replaces him may not have as large of a role. The Commanders are also expected to target a cornerback, one who can play either in the slot like McCain or on the outside, early in this year's draft.

Several top cornerbacks have been mocked to the Commanders in recent weeks, including Penn State's Joey Porter Jr., Oregon's Christian Gonzalez and Illinois' Devon Witherspoon.
