Commanders Cut RB J.D. McKissic; What's Next?

J.D. McKissic played two seasons for the Washington Commanders. Now, he's looking for a new home.

While the Washington Commanders continue to add to their roster through free agency, they are also doing some subtraction.

According to NFL Network, the team is parting ways with veteran running back J.D. McKissic.

McKissic, who turns 30 this offseason, played in just eight games for the Commanders this past season due to injury. He only ran the ball 22 times for 95 yards.

With the addition of third-round rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr., McKissic's role was reduced primarily as a pass-blocker and receiver. He caught 27 passes for 173 yards in 2022.

With McKissic out of the picture, the Commanders still don't have a massive need at running back. The team still has Robinson alongside Antonio Gibson, Jonathan Williams and Jaret Patterson on the depth chart. However, Gibson is entering a contract year and will likely walk in free agency should he have a stellar year for an opportunity to contribute more.

The chances for the Commanders to draft a running back in the later rounds of the draft this year are pretty decent at this point. The team could also take a flier on an undrafted free agent and have him compete alongside Williams and Patterson for the RB3 role in new coach Eric Bieniemy's new offense this upcoming season.
