Washington Commanders' Dan Quinn Entering 'New Space' With High Draft Pick
New Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn who has been in the NFL for over two decades in various roles, has seen just about everything - except what he is about to experience in the Nation's Capital.
The Commanders currently hold the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and as luck would have it, Quinn has never had such a high draft pick in his time in the league.
“No, I think over probably my last 10 or 11 years, I think I was with [QB] Russell [Wilson] who was in the early part of his career in Seattle and then [QB] Matt [Ryan], was kind of in the middle and [QB] Dak [Prescott], had already kind of gotten up and underway," Quinn said. "So no, for me in this space it's new.”
So, Quinn, in his second head coaching role, is entering uncharted territory as Washington looks to put an exclamation mark on their offseason work by selecting the team's new quarterback for the future.
The likes of LSU's Jayden Daniels, North Carolina's Drake Maye, and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy are all names that have been linked with Washington over the last couple of months.
But having such a high draft pick, usually means pressure to make sure the selection is right as teams who select in the top five for a quarterback and it doesn't work out, are often left with egg on their face.
“I think at any position, you want to just make sure you nail it whether that's the second pick or the second round, the third round, because I know all of these players potentially have a chance to have a really high impact," Quinn said.
So the Commanders' offseason has gotten off to a positive start with their free agency haul, and now attention turns to the NFL Draft, where Quinn will be entering unfamiliar terroritory.
But he isn't feeling any more pressure than normal to get the pick right.
