Commanders' Draft Picks & Cap Space Make an Enticing Head Coaching Opportunity
The Washington Commanders will be undergoing significant change this offseason with a new head coach now being the priority after Adam Peters was named new general manager.
After being in the NFL doldrums for the last decade despite claiming the NFC East in 2020 and haven't had a winning season since 2015, there isn't much to get excited about, is there?
But now, with new ownership, led by Josh Harris and general manager Peters, the times are changing in the nation's capital, and for the better.
So what makes the Washington job attractive for potential head coaching candidates?
"Washington has a new owner with a reputation for providing resources and for being patient," ESPN writes. "The Commanders are in a far better spot under Harris than they were with previous owner Dan Snyder. Also, they have the second overall draft pick and five selections in the top 100. Plus based on early salary cap projections, they'll have the most space in the NFL."
The Commanders having the No. 2 overall pick is enticing enough. Washington might need a new quarterback if the incoming head coach isn't sold on Sam Howell as the starter.
Given that there are a host of talented quarterbacks in Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels, the Commanders will likely have their pick of which player they want.
What is perhaps even better is that ESPN writes that Washington will have serious cap space to make some moves.
Why Commanders Should Hire Eric Bieniemy
Peters hinted that the team will build through the draft, and then supplement with free-agent signings, so there is a clear path that the organization wants to follow. This is made easier with serious cap room to make some shrewd signings in free agency.
Does all of that make Washington an enticing project for any respective head coaching candidates?
It sure sounds like it.
