NFL Draft: Commanders 'Win-Win' Trade Scenario With Raiders
Speculation and projection will be at an all-time high this week and the ideas we read and hear about what the Washington Commanders will do Thursday night will range from the spectacular to the ridiculous.
Chalk up one NFL.com trade idea in that first category, if the Commanders pull it off for the right prospect.
In the trade, happening on Day 1 of the NFL Draft, NFL.com projects Washington to send picks No. 16, No. 47, and No. 118 - or a future fourth-round pick - to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for pick No. 7.
"The primary value of this move is in Washington's ability to leapfrog ahead of Atlanta at No. 8 overall to select a quarterback," says NFL.com. "The versatility to also perhaps nab the first or second cornerback off the board...or the first offensive lineman at No. 7 is an added benefit...should the passer the Commanders believe in still be available after the Colts pick at No. 4, Washington brass had better get on the phone."
It's an interesting trade scenario because it's a clearly aggressive move by a team that missed the playoffs just last season, and atypical to the behavior seen from past teams that missed out on postseason play.
What makes it more intriguing is that it may not be for a quarterback given the potential for a top two corner or top offensive lineman to still be available.
The good news in this trade is that Washington gives up very little future draft capital, but takes a clear shot at getting an impact player at the top of its class.
As for the quarterback they believe in, according to the Commanders, that man is Sam Howell who cost them just a fifth-round pick one year ago.
If this pick turns out to be Ohio State offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. or either cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez (Oregon) or Devon Witherspoon (Illinois), then the team will be doing a great service toward facilitating Howell's success.
But that 90-pick wait between Washington's first and second picks at this point would see a lot of talent coming off the board.
