Coach Eric Bieniemy On Commanders Offense: 'Good S*** To Watch'

The Washington Commanders offense is "making a lot of strides" under offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

Someone could argue the Washington Commanders’ biggest addition of the offseason was offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

Bieniemy is tasked with improving an offense that was 24th in points per game (18.9), 21st in passing yards per game (204.2) and 20th in total yards per game (330.3). But if the Commanders’ growth since Bieniemy was handed the offensive reins is any indication, they’ll have a chance to be much improved this season.

“My number one job is to help take these guys to another level,“ Bieniemy said. "I can see it because when you think about where we started in the spring to where we are right now, we're making a lot of strides. I'm proud of these guys.

"It's been some good s*** to watch."

Bieniemy’s track record in his five years as the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator speaks for itself. Kansas City was consistently one of the five best offenses with Bieniemy and he oversaw the development of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Now Bieniemy is tasked with developing second-year quarterback Sam Howell.

"Sam is doing a hell of a job," Bieniemy said. "Sometimes early in camp, you can see where he was overthinking but we've been putting a lot on our players [and] putting a lot on his plate...I've seen the growth. You can see when he's confident, he's coming off the mound releasing that ball. It's a thing of beauty."

Bieniemy has been tough on his players in hopes of helping them grow and become better. In some instances, players have had trouble adapting. But for Bieniemy, it's a part of the process if the players are going to reach their full potential.

“We all got to get uncomfortable to get comfortable,“ Bieniemy said. "There's some new demands and expectations that I expect. I expect us to be the team that we're supposed to be. It's not going to be easy, and everybody ain't going to like the process but when it's all said and done with, my job is make sure that we're doing it the right way."

The Commanders are only going to go as far as their offense takes them. With an already strong defense, Washington's offense doesn't need to set the world on fire. But if Bieniemy can implement his system and get players to buy into his process, Washington will have a chance to go to another level.
