Can Commanders Coach Eric Bieniemy Extend His 15-Game Winning Streak vs. Broncos?

Washington Commanders coach Eric Bieniemy has a long winning streak against the Denver Broncos intact entering Week 2. Extending it may rest on young quarterback Sam Howell improving on his Week 1 performance.
In this story:

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Commanders travel this weekend to face the Denver Broncos who are coming off a disappointing one-point loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Commanders assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is very familiar with the Broncos after spending 10 years on the Kansas City Chiefs staff.

In those 10 seasons, the Chiefs went 15-5 and haven't lost to their division rival since 2015.

A history any coach would be proud to be a part of, but not something Bieniemy is leaning on entering Week 2.

"[The Broncos] have always had a great defense," coach Bieniemy said of his experience with this week's opponent. "They have had their struggles (but) coach [Sean] Payton is a hell of a coach and I know he's going to do a great job getting those guys going in the right direction. Our job is to make sure we can hold them off at least one more week."

Of course, Bieniemy is with Washington now, and he says the success he experienced with the Chiefs is no longer relevant.

So too then, should be his current franchise's struggles with the Broncos in the past.

Still, the Commanders have lost two of their three matchups against Denver while Bieniemy was with Kansas City and trails with an 8-7 all-time win-loss record.

During his win streak over the Broncos, Bieniemy's offenses have scored no fewer than 22 points in each matchup, something Washington has only done twice in its last five tries.

Leading this Commanders offense on the field to break that scoring mark and keep the streak alive will be quarterback Sam Howell, who coach Bieniemy says did exactly what he expected him to do in Week 1, but showed some promising character traits as well.

"I thought Sam did - basically - what a first-year starting quarterback probably would do," Bieniemy said. "I thought there was moments where he looked great, I thought there was moments where he looked just ok, and I thought there was moments that he can use as growing pains...The good thing was that I thought Sam did was that he played through it."

At the end of the day, Bieniemy isn't worried about what the numbers behind the win were, he's only concerned about whether they get a 'W' or an 'L' on any given weekend.

Last week they got the win, and he's proud of them for getting it.

This week, he's looking to find new pride in starting a new winning streak with his new franchise in Washington.
