Commanders Interviewing Texans' Bobby Slowik Tuesday
The Washington Commanders are continuing their coaching search on Tuesday.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Commanders will interview Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik in person for their head coaching job. This comes after the Commanders met with Slowik virtually on Sunday.
After the Texans' dominant 45-14 win over the Cleveland Browns in the AFC Wild Card Round, Slowik should be near the top of every coaching search for a team with a head coach vacancy. Cleveland had the No. 1 defense in the regular season but had no answers for Slowik and rookie phenom C.J. Stroud. Stroud picked apart the Browns, completing 16 of 21 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns, all of which came in the first half.
Stroud's performance was another chapter in one of the most impressive seasons from a rookie quarterback in NFL history, and the man behind the offense and his development, Slowik, could be poised to lead his own team next season in the aftermath of their success.
While the Texans didn't perform as well yesterday in their Divisional Round loss against the Baltimore Ravens, Slowik is still on the radar for nearly every team with a coaching vacancy.
Before becoming a rising star in the coaching industry, Slowik cut his teeth in Washington as a defensive assistant from 2011-13 and was part of a star-studded coaching staff under former head coach Mike Shanahan that included four current head coaches: San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay.
Slowik returned to the NFL when Kyle went to San Francisco in 2017. He was a defensive quality control coach from 2017-2018 before going to the other side of the ball as an offensive assistant in 2019-2020. He was the offensive game passing game specialist in 2021 and the offensive passing game coordinator in 2022.
Slowik, 36, followed Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans and got his first shot at being an offensive coordinator this season. After Stroud's stellar rookie campaign, Slowik may have his name added to the list of Washington assistants who later became a head coach.
Slowik arrived in San Francisco alongside the Commanders new head of football operations, Adam Peters. That familiarity makes it easy to connect the dots and could give Washington a slight edge if Slowik has his options of where he'll become a head coach.

Along with Slowik's familiarity with Peters, the Commanders are armed with the No. 2 overall pick, one of their five picks in the top 100, and have the most cap space entering free agency. While the most important ingredient to Slowik's success, Stroud, wouldn't be able to follow him, the draft picks, cap space and an exec from his previous stop will give him the resources to build a team in the image he wants immediately.
