Commanders QB Jacoby Brissett: First-Team Reps?

Jacoby Brissett is competing to be the Washington Commanders starting quarterback.

Jacoby Brissett may finally get his chance to run with the Washington Commanders' first-team offense.

The veteran quarterback finds himself in the midst of a competition with Sam Howell, though the latter has taken all of the first-team reps, though that could be changing in the coming days. Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said that at some point, Brissett will see some time with the first unit in training camp after discussing the best time for that opportunity with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard.

“At some point, he's going to have to work with them, just so he gets to know them and they get to know him," Rivera said. "We started talking about that the last couple days, trying to figure out when would be a good opportunity to do it."

Brissett has played for four teams and is entering his eighth year in the NFL. He threw 12 touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 games for the Cleveland Browns last season. The Commanders quarterback is 18-30 in his 48 starts.

Rivera has stated that Washington is having an open quarterback competition, though the reps Brissett has gotten with the first team compared to Howell don't back up that claim. Howell has taken all of the first-team reps and has been heavily backed by his coaches and teammates, which points to him likely being the Commanders' starting quarter when the regular season begins.

It'll take a lot for Brissett to catch up to Howell, but a strong showing for eighth-year quarterback would be a step in the right direction if he still has a chance to win the job.
