Washington Commanders Meeting With Quarterback Jayden Daniels After LSU Pro Day
The draft process is well underway with Pro Days taking place all over the nation, and the Washington Commanders are getting a close look potentially at their next quarterback.
Commanders general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn were in attendance to watch quarterback Jayden Daniels' workout at LSU's Pro Day on Wednesday. His workout isn't the only glimpse the Washington brass will get of Daniels, as NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Daniels will be meeting with the team immediately after his Pro Day concluded.
Washington is far from the only team interested in the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, as he was also scheduled to meet with the New York Giants, New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders. Other head coaches who were in attendance to see Daniels were Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce and Saints head coach Dennis Allen.
After his Pro Day, Daniels spoke about potentially getting drafted by the Commanders and what it would mean to him on NFL Network.
"It's a great feeling being blessed enough to be picked that high," Daniels said. "What they're doing right now [with a] new regime and everything like that, as the process goes on we'll have more conversations and everything. From there, it's really just getting into that work. Whoever drafts me [is] an organization that believes in me and thinks I can lead them to Super Bowls."
Daniels threw for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions in his Heisman campaign. He also ran for 1,134 yards and scored 10 times on the ground.
Daniels had been linked to the Commanders and was a big better favorite to be their pick at No. 2 overall, but the odds have slimmed in the past week. He's a -115 favorite on FanDuel and a -125 favorite on DraftKings. Michigan quarterback J.J McCarthy has gone from long shot to in the running after the NFL Owners Meetings, as he has +400 odds on FanDuel and +275 on DraftKings. He still trails UNC QB Drake Maye, who has +150 odds on DraftKings and +145 on FanDuel.
With the opportunity to meet with Daniels, Peters and Quinn can see how good of a fit he'll be for the Commanders as they look to end the franchise's long search for a franchise quarterback. If the three can mesh, it may be hard for Peters and Quinn to look past his production and not anoint him as their guy with the No. 2 overall pick.
