Commanders DB Kam Curl Extension Coming?
Washington Commanders' defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young aren't the only players on defense playing for another contract.
Washington Commanders defensive back Kam Curl is entering the final year of his rookie deal. With his performance in the last three seasons, Bleacher Report believes Washington should give Curl a contract extension this offseason.
"In three seasons as Washington's starting safety, Kamren Curl has collected 270 tackles and become a cornerstone of the defense," Bleacher Report writes. "One of the early priorities for the franchise's new ownership group should be locking the 24-year-old into a long-term contract. Curl's existing deal expires after the 2023 season."
Curl was taken in the seventh round of the 2020 draft by Washington. He had three interceptions in his rookie year and helped anchor a defense that led Washington to an NFC East title. He also had 88 tackles and two sacks. Curl had a career-high 99 tackles in 2021.
In 2022, Curl played in 12 games and had 83 tackles, including a career-high six for a loss. Curl missed four games due to thumb and ankle injuries.
Washington will have multiple tough decisions to make for its defense beyond 2023. Sweat, Young and Curl all playing for a second contract, but the odds that the Commanders can keep all three is slim to none.
If Curl can stay healthy and anchor a Washington secondary that added pieces through the draft, he could be in line for a big pay day.
