Commanders Linked with Jadeveon Clowney Signing

The Commanders are being listed as a landing spot for Jadeveon Clowney. But isn’t getting Chase Young right a better idea?

The Washington Commanders employ no shortage of defensive end options - at least if we count Chase Young among those options.

Ideally, his injury issues are behind him, and if that’s true, the trade rumors will be behind him as well.

But until then? The idea of collecting pass-rushers is generally a good one .. and therefore, maybe it is a good idea to listen to even the gossipy connections.

And that, to our knowledge, is all we have that connects the Commanders with arguably the best free-agent player remaining on the market.

The Commanders are being listed as a landing spot for Jadeveon Clowney by David Latham of Last Word on Sports. It is important to stress that this isn’t sourced material … but that doesn’t mean it lacks merit.

"At this point in his career, Jadeveon Clowney is probably better off as a rotational pass rusher, rather than an every-down starter,” the outlet writes. “However, that doesn’t mean he can’t be effective in the right role. The former first-overall pick is still effective in the right role and is an ideal player for a team looking for a jack of all trades, master of none on the edge. He can do a little bit of everything, and that versatility is crucial in an injury-filled sport like football."

We’re not sure about the scouting report here; Clowney is a pass-rusher; that will be his purpose with whichever team signs him. … and he only totaled two of those while making $8 million for one Browns season.

We also think the Commanders have their starting four defensive linemen etched onto the depth chart, and they also drafted two edge guys in K.J. Henry and Andre Jones Jr. … and conventionally teams want to see their kids at camp, for they given to a move like this.

Waiting and signing a short-term deal has become an almost annual event for Clowney, once upon a time the No. 1 pick in his NFL Draft. At age 30, maybe teams are less excited to chase him than ever. But the website suggesting this has one thing right: This is an “injury-filled sport” … something Washington would probably prefer to conquer with a healthy Young rather than with a pricy Clowney.
