Eagles Cut Dan Arnold; Could Commanders Sign?
As the Washington Commanders look to unseat the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East, could a player released by the defending NFC Champions be a fit in offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy's offense?
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Saturday that the Eagles are releasing veteran tight end Dan Arnold. Given the uncertain status of Logan Thomas as Week 1 approaches, Arnold feels like someone general manager Martin Mayhew and coach Ron Rivera should at least consider as a possible addition for the Commanders.
Arnold, 28, had signed with the Eagles after losing out on targets last season as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars after the team acquired Evan Engram. The well-traveled Arnold -- who has also had stints with the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers -- had over 400 receiving yards in both 2020 and 2021.
Obviously, Travis Kelce's don't grow on trees, but if the offense he presided over in Kansas City is any indication, Bieniemy will lean on his tight ends as he tries to ease quarterback Sam Howell in as a starter. Thomas has been a productive player in the past, but he's played in just 20 of a possible 34 games over the past two seasons and is currently nursing a calf injury. His backups -- John Bates and Cole Turner -- have just 40 combined catches in their young NFL careers.
Especially with star receiver Terry McLaurin now dealing with a turf toe injury that could keep him out for a Week 1 tilt against the Cardinals, it feels like adding a veteran pass catcher such as Arnold would be a wise move for the Commanders.
