Commanders 'Comfortable' With Jacoby Brissett, Sam Howell at QB, Says GM

With the NFL draft just three days away, the Washington Commanders are seemingly set at quarterback despite doing their homework on one prospect.

For a team that's seemingly comfortable with their quarterback situation, it hasn't stopped the Washington Commanders from doing their homework on one quarterback ahead of the 2023 NFL draft

The quarterback Washington has spent the most time on is Tennessee's Hendon Hooker. Whether it's smoke or actual interest, Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew is happy with who they currently have under center.

"As far as the quarterback position goes, we feel very comfortable with the guys we have," Mayhew said. "If you think about it, we have a young guy in Sam that coming out at one point was rated very high. We were fortunate, we believe, to get him where we got him."

Sam Howell is seemingly the odds-on favorite to win the job for Washington after being taken in the fifth round of the 2022 draft and winning his lone start of the season, but the team also brought in Jacoby Brissett, who started 11 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2022. He threw for 2,608 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

"We got Jacoby Brissett coming off in what we believe was one of his better years as a player," Mayhew said. "It is one of those things that is funny because typically when you get quarterbacks it is when they are coming off a tough time. We feel good about what we did there as well and we will see what happens.”

If the Commanders were to take a quarterback, Hooker would seemingly be their guy. In his senior season, he threw for 3,135 yards, 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions in 11 games. Hooker was considered a Heisman candidate before he tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee on Nov. 19 in a 63-38 loss to South Carolina.

Along with being the only top-30 visit Washington has had with a quarterback, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy attended Tennessee's Pro Day on Mar. 30, which would have allowed him to meet and spend more time with the potential first-round prospect.

Whether a quarterback is a legitimate possibility at No. 16, questions about how Washington is going to address the most important position in football will persist beyond Thursday.
