NFL Mock Draft: Commanders Go 'Safer' Selection With No. 2 Pick

The Washington Commanders hold the No. 2 overall pick, and in NFL.com's latest mock draft, the franchise goes with a 'safe' pick.

All eyes will be on the Washington Commanders at the NFL Draft as the franchise holds the No. 2 overall pick. While Caleb Williams feels like a near certainty to go to the Chicago Bears first overall (barring nothing outrageous happening), what Washington does is up in the air.

There have been mock drafts where the franchise takes a quarterback, and in others, the Commanders trade back for a bigger draft haul.

With still over four weeks until the draft, the Commanders have been doing their due diligence at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis as interviews have been taking place with players.

There are several ways Washington could go with its No. 2 pick, but NFL.com thinks that the franchise will go 'safe' and take LSU's Jayden Daniels.

"New GM Adam Peters could opt for an experienced quarterback prospect to help resurrect the franchise," NFL.com writes. "Daniels' steady growth as a five-year college starter (55 games) could make him a safer selection than other QB options at No. 2 overall."

So that would mark the end of Sam Howell's tenure as the starter. While he did show his talents at times last season, it was anything but consistent and it appears that the lure of drafting one of a host of talented quarterbacks was a force too strong for Washington.

In Daniels, the Commanders get a proper dual-threat quarterback who can throw it all over the yard (40 TDs last season) and also takes care of the football (just four INTs).

Add to that, Daniels threw for 3,812 yards but also rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Given how brutal the NFL can be for rookies, don't expect offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury to constantly put Daniels in harm's way with designed runs, but it is a nice lever to pull every now and then.

To QB or Not to QB? What Should Commanders Do With No. 2 Pick?

Daniels becoming the face of the new Washington regime makes sense, but it doesn't exactly feel like a 'safe' pick as no one really knows how his career will pan out as we have seen high draft picks flame out (sorry Mitch Trubisky).

Where you get drafted matters, and it appears that Daniels, will at least have a fighting chance in Washington to become the franchise quarterback the organization has been desperate for.
