Commanders' Dan Snyder Sale Gives Washington Best Offseason in NFL?

The Washington Commanders were tabbed as the most improved team heading into the 2023 season, but not for what they've added to their team on the field.
In this story:

Having your franchise named the most improved team after a busy offseason is a reason for excitement. While the players a team has added are typically the focal point, sometimes what you've cut ties with is just as important.

Enter the Washington Commanders

ESPN ranked each team's offseason and the Commanders topped the list after the progress made in the Snyders selling the team.

"You can make a reasonable case that no team made a more significant move to aid their chances of becoming a Super Bowl contender this offseason than the Commanders did by beginning to extricate themselves from their disastrous ownership group," ESPN writes.

Exactly how disastrous has Snyder's run been outside of all the scandals and allegations made against the organization?

Snyder has been Washington's owner since 1999. The Commanders have only won 43 percent of their games and two playoff games. From 1974-1998, Washington won 58 percent of its games, 16 playoff games, three Super Bowls (1983, 1988, 1992) and had two MVPs in kicker Mark Mosely (1982) and quarterback Joe Theismann (1983).

Washington has yet to reach a Super Bowl or have a player receive an MVP vote with Snyder at the helm.

"The legacy of the Snyder era is just how great it is to be an NFL team owner," ESPN writes. "Snyder took over one of the most popular franchises and enjoyed virtually no success during his time in charge, and he will make billions of dollars for agreeing to move on."

Whether Snyder's departure will translate to success in 2023 remains to be seen, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.
