Washington Commanders vs. New England Patriots Live Updates: Commanders Seal Win With Interception

The Washington Commanders will look to avoid a three-game losing streak when they face the New England Patriots.

A new-look Washington Commanders team will take the field for the first time when they head to Gillette Stadium to face the New England Patriots on Sunday.

The Commanders (3-5) traded their top two edge rushers, Montez Sweat and Chase Young on Tuesday. Sweat went to the Chicago Bears for a second-round pick, while Young went to the San Francisco 49ers for a compensatory third-round pick. The tandem of Sweat and Young combined for 11.5 sacks on a defense that ranks among the worst in football and allows the second-most points per game in the league.

The Commanders have lost five of their last six games after a 2-0 start to the season. Washington went toe-to-toe with the Philadelphia Eagles (7-1) on Oct. 29 but lost 38-31. Quarterback Sam Howell had one of the best performances of his career, completing 39 of 52 passes for 397 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell (14) passes the ball from his end zone against the Philadelphia Eagles during the third quarter at FedExField.

Sam Howell has thrown for 2,146 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

The Patriots (2-6) have also gotten off to a rough start to the season, though quarterback Mac Jones has played better of late. Jones had thrown four touchdowns and just one interception.

A win for Washington would be its first against the Patriots in Sept. 28, 2003 and first road win against them since Oct. 13, 1996.

The Patriots have won four straight games against the Commanders.
