2020 Re-Draft: Commanders 'Hurt' NFC East Rival
Things would look much different for the Washington Commanders if they had a franchise quarterback.
In Bleacher Report's 2020 redraft, they had the Washington Commanders solving their problem at quarterback by taking Jalen Hurts with the No. 2 pick.
"The Commanders are heading into 2023 hoping that second-year QB Sam Howell pans out as a viable starter.," Bleacher Report writes. "There would be no such questions with Hurts in the fold, as he'd be a perfect complement to Washington's talented defense (seventh in points allowed last season), 12th-ranked rushing attack and talented receiving duo (Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson)."
The Commanders took Chase Young with that pick in 2020.
The deal only gets sweeter when you factor in that Washington would be taking Hurts from its division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles.
With Hurts in the fold, questions surrounding the quarterback position would be non-existent. And when you consider Washington's talent at the skill positions and on defense, it isn't far-fetched to say the Commanders would be one of the top teams in the NFC.
Washington has started 12 quarterbacks in the last five years, three more than any other team in the NFL.
Last season, Hurts threw for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns, and ran for 760 yards, reaching the end zone 13 times. He signed a five-year extension worth $255 million, with nearly $179.4 million guaranteed and a $23.2 million signing bonus according to Spotrac.
Sam Howell may pan out for the Commanders, but he's easily the biggest question mark for the franchise heading into the 2023 season. With Hurts, not only would he have answered Washington's woes at the quarterback position, he'd lift an organization that's on shaky ground.
