Washington Commanders' Sam Howell 'Living My Dream!' as Starting QB
Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell has played only seven games in his NFL career but has already experienced almost everything. After winning the starting role in training camp, Howell has shown promise as Washington's starter.
With a 3-3 record, the Commanders' season is poised nicely as they gear up to face the New York Giants, and Howell still has to pinch himself to believe that he is a starting quarterback in the NFL.
"I'm always having fun," Howell said. "You would never really see it on my face, I really enjoy what I do, and I'm living my dream. This is what I dreamed of doing from when I was a kid and every single day I come in here to work it's just so much fun. I'm just so blessed to be where I am in my life, and it's so much fun to be a part of this team as well. There are so many cool guys in that locker room, and a lot of guys that I call my friends. It's just so much fun to come to work here every day.”
Howell's start to life as an NFL quarterback hasn't been smooth sailing, and in truth, it was never going to be. Four of Washington's five games have been decided by one score as the close games have come thick and fast for the Commanders.
That makes their 3-3 record look slightly better, as the team wins the close contests (three wins, one loss), which Howell appreciates.
“There's definitely a lot more [close games] than there was in college," Howell said. "There's not as big as a gap as there is in college. So, it's one of those things where you really got to be on your ones and twos when you get to game day, and you’ve really got to be prepared. You just got to play all four quarters because most of the time in the NFL it's going to come down to the end of the fourth quarter. It does kind of seem like in the NFL it always comes down to the end.”
While naturally, fans would prefer to have blowout wins each week, but the Commanders are getting in close games and are winning them. The confidence that can build in the locker room can't be underestimated.
With the Giants now in sight, the Commanders can build on their win over the Atlanta Falcons and get some momentum going in their season.
After the defense played well against the Falcons and Howell leading the offense with more authority with each passing week, Washington should feel confident that it can roll into MetLife Stadium and emerge victorious.
And if the game comes down to the fourth quarter and a play needs to be made, Howell and the offense have been there many times already this season, and given that it's a division game, Howell might be called upon to get his team over the line.
