The Washington Commanders were handed a 40-20 loss by the previously winless Chicago Bears at FedEx Field in a game that took the breath away...but for the wrong reasons.

The Bears obliterated the Commanders in the first half as Chicago's offense racked up 307 yards of total offense to lead 27-3 at halftime.

Coming into the game in a positive mood despite the 34-31 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, does what transpired against the Bears take away some of the good that came out of the Eagles game?

Quarterback Sam Howell doesn't think so and insists that despite the poor loss, the team isn't at panic stations just yet.

“I don’t think so,” Howell said. “Obviously, it hurts right now, but I think the main thing is that everyone in that locker room knows what we are capable of doing. I think, at times throughout the game, you saw that. We just got to do a better job of being more consistent. We’re not panicking. We know the team that we can be; it's just a matter of continuing to pull together, to get better, and we’ll be alright.”

After a 2-0 start to the season, Washington has hit the skids and is now on a three-game losing streak. Coming into the Chicago game, many felt that Washington was the better team on paper and that a win on their home deck was nearly a formality.

After all, the Bears were on a 14-game winless streak, so it was all set up for the Commanders. It was at home, in front of a sell-out crowd, and on primetime, but the type of performance that was put forth simply wasn't good enough.

For head coach Ron Rivera, he knows the team let the fans down.

“We let them down," Rivera said. "I'm disappointed that we let them down, and I got to make sure that when we get out there we're doing the things the way we need to get them done. And obviously we didn't. That's on me to begin with. We'll get those things corrected. We're a young team. We have some young players that we're trying to develop and get them out there and doing the things we need them to do. Every time we play though, we're going to play to win. We're going to give them our best. Sometimes our best isn't as good as it needs to be. We got to get those things corrected, and that's the truth of the matter.”

The Commanders now have a mini-bye before they tackle the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Oct. 15, and it is no secret that some harsh truths will be put out in plain sight during the coming days.

Washington started the season well and now is in dire need of an injection of positivity after getting a fresh 40-burger dropped on them by a previously winless Bears team.
