Commanders Need 'Robust Work' from Offensive Line
The Washington Commanders' offseason has been positively highlighted by adding Eric Bieniemy to the staff, facilitating a competitive quarterback battle and most importantly the team being sold.
But lost in the commotion is possibly Washington's biggest question mark: the offensive line.
Pro Football Focus ranked the Commanders' line 27th in the NFL, and turnover across the board has been dramatic. So what can be expected of the unit in 2023?
“Virtually no Pro Bowl potential exists among the starters, and only left tackle Charles Leno is a definitive steady option," The Athletic's Ben Standig writes.
That's the thesis. The group has just one guaranteed force, and everything else is a tossup. Bieniemy and company have their work cut out for them trying to piece this mess together.
"Let’s see how new right tackle Andrew Wylie (nine sacks allowed in 2022) performs with Sam Howell behind him instead of Super Bowl MVP/QB magician Patrick Mahomes, or Sam Cosmi takes to right guard duties or free-agent signee Nick Gates thrives at center or if the left guard battle between Saahdiq Charles and Chris Paul produces a definitive or default victor," The Athletic continued.
Yep. That's a million "what-ifs" across the front five entering training camp. And while rookie linemen Ricky Stromberg and Braeden Daniels could step into surprising roles, this year could "turn into redshirt seasons."
Though there could be a silver lining to all of this. Washington could replace as many as four linemen, and a complete remodel at least means change.
There's a chance the result is disastrous, but nearly complete turnover at least gives room for hope.
