Commanders Need QB, But O-Line Essential As Well
Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell had a tough introduction to the NFL in his first year as a starter. While Howell only had one start under his belt prior to Week 1, confidence was high that he could do some good things this season.
While at times he did, the offensive line at the start of the season did not.
The Commanders gave up the second-most sacks in the NFL this season (65) and, at the beginning of the season, were on record pace to blitz David Carr's sack record of 76.
As such, ESPN has the Commanders' biggest offseason priority being to upgrade the quarterback's protection.
"To help the quarterback, the Commanders have to address the offensive line," ESPN wrote. "Washington allowed 65 sacks, a byproduct of scheme, protection and a young QB. The Commanders will possibly have at least one new tackle, center, and guard. Right guard Sam Cosmi, though, was excellent."
Looking at the sack numbers early on, it is a surprise that Howell survived to play all 17 games. Howell was sacked 35 times in his first seven games, including nine against the Buffalo Bills.
The protection did improve as the season went on, as in the last four games, Howell was sacked just seven times, but going forward, it is easy to see why the offensive line needs improving.
Biggest Offseason Question: What's Next For Howell?
This will especially be true if the Commanders draft a quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick, as the last thing Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels want in their rookie season is to be running for their life.
Washington has a host of needs this offseason, but perhaps none more important than upgrading the protection for whoever is the starting quarterback next season.
