Commanders QB Jacoby Brissett Focused on 'Being Good Teammate'

With his deal now done, Washington Commanders quarterback Jacoby Brissett is focused on building relationships, not taking the starting job.
In this story:

Many would say new Washington Commanders quarterback Jacoby Brissett did enough with the Cleveland Browns last year to prove he's worthy of a starting job in the NFL.

If coach Ron Rivera is true to his word, Brissett is going to get his chance to do so again, as he competes with second-year quarterback Sam Howell for the right to lead the Commanders

But that's not where his head is at today.

"Every day in this league is competition," Brissett said. "The main thing is to just come in to be a good teammate. That's what I think I've carried with me throughout my career and then everything else has always taken care of itself."

Brissett has been around this league for a while now. From being a third-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots to being traded the following year to the Indianapolis Colts followed by one-year stays with the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns consecutively, he's seen about every situation a quarterback can.

But this one is a little different than even he's seen.

In Washington he's expected to provide competition for Howell, but also will be asked to mentor him if it's decided Brissett will be the backup quarterback.

"Being a good teammate will trump anything," Brissett said of the competitor/teammate dynamic. "I may need him, he may need me...just finding ways to help each other to get better for our own benefit but also for our room, for our offense, and also for this team."

This won't be the last time Brissett is asked about competing while also taking on a mentorship role, and Howell will have plenty of opportunities to answer questions about battling the veteran this preseason.

And if Howell is going to be taught anything by his new Commanders teammate, it should start today with how Brissett handled the potentially controversial topic.
