NFL Mock Draft: Commanders Take Texas QB?

The Washington Commanders have started 12 quarterbacks in the last five years. Did they finally find their long-term answer in this mock draft?
In this story:

It's no secret that the Washington Commanders have struggled to find their franchise quarterback.

Washington has started 12 quarterbacks in the last five years, the most in the NFL. The next closest team, the Denver Broncos, has started nine in the same span.

Now Washington's hopes rest in the hands of Sam Howell. Whether or not he is the guy will determine the fate of many throughout the organization. If Howell isn't the guy, Washington will likely find itself looking for another quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.

In ESPN's mock draft, the Commanders had the No. 8 pick and took Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.

"Ewers came to Texas with plenty of hype and looked the part before hurting his shoulder against Alabama in Week 2," ESPN writes. "He shows a smooth, effortless arm as a passer, but I'd like to see more urgency in the mental and physical parts of the game. Under the tutelage of coach Steve Sarkisian -- who developed Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones -- Ewers could be in store for a big season."

ESPN also listed offensive tackle, edge and tight ends as needs for the Commanders.

In 2022, Ewers threw for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions in 10 games. He also missed three games because of a shoulder injury.

Ewers showed flashes in his sophomore season, his first as the Longhorns' starting quarterback. In six of Ewers' starts, he threw for under 200 yards, including a streak of four straight before Texas' bowl game against the Washington Huskies.

If Ewers can make a jump in his junior year and stay healthy, he can prove he's one of the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft.

If the Commanders find themselves in a position to take a quarterback, that likely won't be the only significant change the organization undergoes. One would imagine it'll lead to a search for a new head coach and potentially a new regime in the front office.

But if Ewers can prove himself as one of the top quarterbacks in his draft class, the Commanders may finally have the solution they've been searching for under center.
