Breaking Commanders Embarrassing Streak Critical to Coach Ron Rivera's Job Security
The Washington Commanders last made the playoffs in 2020 with a 7-9 record as winners of the NFC East Division.
That year the group was mocked as the "NFC Least" and the Commanders were considered the technical winner of the division despite having a losing record.
It was the only time in Washington’s history it made it to the postseason with a losing record, but it wasn’t the only time the team went into the playoffs with a single-digit win total.
In fact, half of the team’s last six playoff appearances have come off of fewer than 10 win regular seasons.
The last time a Washington team made the playoffs with more than 10 wins was back in 1991, and that team added the franchise’s last Super Bowl victory on top of it.
And that streak of more than 30 years without winning more than 10 games in a single regular season is by far the longest in the NFL according to an info graphic published by 33rd Team.
The second-longest streak belongs to the Jacksonville Jaguars who last won 11 or more regular season games in the 2007 season.
Last year the Jaguars came two wins from hitting the mark and hope to do so this year.
If they do, and the Commanders don’t, then the team would become the only one to not have at least one 11 win season from 2016 to now.
In a league built on parity and the idea that any team can rise to the top any year, the fact that Washington owns this active streak record is obviously embarrassing and just the kind of thing the franchise’s new owners will look to fix in the near future.
If coach Ron Rivera and his staff can fix it for them this season, then it’ll give them a fighting chance of leading the Commanders in the next.
