Commanders' Ron Rivera: 'No Reason' Eric Bieniemy Shouldn't Be Head Coach

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera spoke highly of offensive coordinator at the NFL QB coaching summit.
In this story:

Eric Bieniemy's pursuit of a head coaching job has been baffling to many.

Among the people who believe Bieniemy should already be a head coach is Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera spoke about Bieniemy's prospects of becoming a head coach at the Ozzie Newsome General Manager Forum and Quarterback Summit on Friday.

"I will be very blunt about this," Rivera said per Yahoo Sports. "There's no reason he shouldn't be a head coach in the NFL."

Bieniemy is entering his first season as the Commanders assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. Before going to Washington, he was with the Kansas City Chiefs for 10 seasons.

From 2013 to 2017, Bieniemy was Kansas City's running backs coach then was elevated to offensive coordinator in 2018.  In his five years as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator, they ranked first in points per game twice and was never lower than sixth.

Bieniemy's coaching also played an instrumental role in quarterback Patrick Mahomes' development and the Chiefs winning two Super Bowls.

Now, Bieniemy will be tasked with improving Washington's offense and the development of quarterback Sam Howell, who is entering his second season after only starting the final game of the 2022 season.

Washington's offense was 24th in points per game in 2022.

While many would argue Bieniemy already deserves a head coaching job, his path has led him to Washington. If he can elevate Washington's offense and Howell establishes himself as the guy under center for Washington in 2023, that may be what finally gets Bieniemy the head coaching job he's been searching for.
