Should Commanders Reunite Kareem Hunt and Eric Bieniemy?
The Washington Commanders have a solid two-headed monster when it comes to the running back room, trusting Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson with ball-carrying duties.
But what if the organization united old friends by bringing former Kansas City running back Kareem Hunt into the fold alongside new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy? Fansided says it's the right move.
"According to a report, the Commanders sounded out Kareem Hunt earlier this offseason about joining the ranks," Fansided wrote. "The backfield threat enjoyed the best campaign of his professional career under Bieniemy's guidance with the Kansas City Chiefs, so the move does make sense as the play-caller looks to hit the ground running in a different environment."
During his two seasons with the Chiefs, Hunt amassed 2,151 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, eclipsing the 1,300-yard mark in his rookie campaign alone and earning Pro Bowl honors straight away.
"Hunt is a veteran and an accomplished, proven performer. He'd need some guarantees about playing time before agreeing to join and there is also the small matter of financial compensation to consider in the tricky-to-assess running back market," Fansided concluded.
And maybe that's true. ... but only to an extent. The aforementioned success with Kansas City? Yeah, that didn't hold. In four years with the Cleveland Browns, Hunt had 1,874 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.
That's less yardage and just one more touchdown than his two years with the Chiefs.
And the “guarantees to join”? We have no idea what they’re talking about there. Hunt is in no position to make demands in that area.
The 27-year-old's regression - more than a few teams have suggested to us that they view Hunt as being close to “out of gas” - is a reality. That, coupled with the amount of talented free agent running backs available, means Washington could get a steal. … if Hunt can really still play. And who is better qualified to make that call, one way or the other, than Bieniemy?
