Commanders' Sam Howell, Brian Robinson Jr. 'Scramble' for Key TD vs. Cardinals

Commanders QB Sam Howell: "Those plays are the things we work on in practice, you know the scramble drill and stuff off-schedule, and I think that’s a big part of this offense, and I was glad to see that today."

The Washington Commanders are in the win column after a 20-16 victory against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at FedEx Field.

The Commanders led a pair of touchdown drives in the win, the first of which came in the first quarter when quarterback Sam Howell found Brian Robinson Jr. for a 7-yard touchdown.

“Yeah, the first touchdown to BRob [Brian Robinson Jr.] you know I kind of broke the pocket, he did a good job of finding a lane, and I just saw a little lane where I could give him the ball," Howell said. "Those plays are the things we work on in practice, you know the scramble drill and stuff off-schedule, and I think that’s a big part of this offense, and I was glad to see that today.”

Robinson also had to improvise during the play. The second-year pro was able to recover after slipping and was open in the end zone for a touchdown.

"Actually, the route I ran I slipped on, that was just me being instinctive getting up on my feet you know and finishing the play," Robinson said. "[QB] Sam [Howell] scrambled out of the pocket I just had to make myself available. That’s the type of reward you get when you finish plays. I was rewarded for continuing to play and being there for my quarterback.”

Robinson Jr. was inactive for Howell's start in Week 18 last season, so Sunday marked the first time the pair of 2022 draft classmates were on the field together. As the focal points of the offense, their synergy will be key to the overall success of the unit.

Howell and Robinson will have another chance to connect for a score next week when the Commanders visit the Denver Broncos. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. on Sunday.
