Dan Orlovsky Reveals Commanders' Sam Howell 'Perfection'
For some, the Washington Commanders' stance on having Sam Howell as the starting quarterback-to-be next season is a beard-scratcher. With only one regular season start to his name, some think the jump to full-time starter might mean Washington takes a step back.
But for former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky, with the help of ESPN's Mina Kimes, has detailed why the Commanders might be in a good spot with Howell as their starter.
Orlovsky broke down a play from Howell's first start against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18 of last season and was left impressed with the footwork and timing from the young quarterback.
“Watch what we focus on when Sam lets the ball out of his hands,” Orlovsky said. “One, two, three, he’s putting his back foot in the ground, ball has to come out right now. Ball is out, left shoulder; that’s perfection.”
Howell was throwing, and as Orlovsky states, the quarterback gets the ball out quickly and on the right spot, which resulted in a big gain for Washington.
For Orlovsky, it is these foundational aspects of Howell's game that has him in a good spot as he looks to start his NFL career next season.
With Eric Bieniemy, who is known for his offensive genius taking over from Scott Turner as the offensive coordinator, coupled with the vision from Orlovsky, we can see why some are bullish on what the second-year quarterback could do.
We aren't saying Howell will be the next big thing, but there is definitely something to work with for Bieniemy, and with a host of weapons in Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel, and running back Brian Robinson Jr., Howell could have a productive season for Washington.
It might only be one play, but Orlovsky likes what he sees from Howell early days, and what he could potentially become under Bieniemy is an enticing thought.
