Commanders' Sam Howell Future Speculation: 'Doesn't Mean Anything Right Now'

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell isn't worried about the speculation over his future with the franchise.

It has been a tough few weeks for the Washington Commanders and quarterback Sam Howell. With the team sitting at 4-10 after their loss to the Los Angeles Rams that saw Howell benched, speculation over his future has been the hot topic this week.

With head coach Ron Rivera taking Howell out of the game against the Rams to "protect" him, Jacoby Brissett stepped in and threw two touchdowns while completing eight of his 10 passes for 124 yards.

As the Commanders currently hold the No. 4 pick in the upcoming draft and with several talented young quarterbacks set to be available, naturally, people are starting to question  Howell's position on the team.

But he isn't worried about that, instead, Howell's focus remains on finishing the season off in a positive way.

“I honestly don't really look at it much," Howell said. "It really doesn't mean anything right now and I think what matters is how I play each and every week. Obviously, you can worry all year long about what's going to happen next year, but for me, I just kind of take the approach of taking it one week at a time and really try to focus in and do everything I can on a week-to-week basis to play my best football."

Howell, in his first year as an NFL starter, has shown glimpses of his talent and has led some to suggest that he is the right person to be the franchise quarterback in the nation's capital.

But in the last four weeks, the offense has failed to score more than 20 points and Howell has thrown six interceptions and has only 785 passing yards, which includes no more than 127 in each of his last two games.

So it hasn't always been productive with Howell starting, but with a young quarterback, those dips are expected. But for Howell, if he plays well in the final three games, then maybe those questions surrounding him and his future might not be there.

"Just because obviously there's a lot of questions about what's going to happen after this year, but I feel like if I'm playing my best football at a consistent rate, then those questions won't be there," Howell said. "So, that's just kind of the way I look at it. I'm just going to try to keep doing what I can to play good football and put good film on tape these last three games.”

The Commanders have three weeks left in their season to try and salvage something from it as there will possibly be sweeping changes in the offseason, and one might just be at quarterback.
