‘Protect Everybody!’ Commanders QB Sam Howell on Practice Fights vs. Ravens

Quarterback Sam Howell commented on the several fights that took place during joint practices between the Washington Commanders and Baltimore Ravens.
In this story:

The Washington Commanders' joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens have been marked by plenty of entertainment - just not always for the reasons some would've liked.

During the first session of the week on Tuesday, there were three fights between Washington and Baltimore, coming from a variety of position groups and depth chart placements.

The high tensions continued Wednesday, leading to more fighting - and according to Commanders quarterback Sam Howell, who spoke to reporters after Tuesday's session, the primary reasoning was the competitiveness on both sides ... but the 22-year-old also took a broader, wiser stance on the topic.

"At the end of the day, it's just guys competing," Howell said. "But we want to look out for each other's careers and make sure we're not doing anything that's too over the line.”

Howell added that the biggest goal is simply protecting everybody on the field, albeit while maintaining a competitive edge - and in this instance, the second-year signal caller feels everything was largely kept under control.

"Obviously, they're trying to make plays, we want to make plays, but at the end of the day, we're going to protect our teammates and that's what happens in camp," Howell said. "Sometimes things get a little physical, but it didn't get too bad."

Will the feisty joint practices carry over into Monday night's preseason game at FedEx Field? Only time will tell ... starting with kickoff at 8 p.m.
