Sam Howell 'Missing' Commanders TE Logan Thomas
As the Washington Commanders' offense sputtered in their 37-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at FedEx Field, their top tight end was nowhere to be found.
Logan Thomas was out after suffering a concussion at the hands of Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson in the end zone. While Thomas made the catch for a touchdown, he missed the second half against Denver and didn't play against the Bills due to the injury.
Commanders (2-1) quarterback Sam Howell noted the impact of not having Thomas, though he was also pleased with how the other tight ends stepped up in his absence.
Howell completed 19 of 29 passes for 179 yards and threw four interceptions against Buffalo. He was also sacked nine times in the loss.
“We love to have Logan out there, and he's a tremendous player for us. But at the same time, we love all our tight ends. I think [TE] Cole [Turner] has done a good job of stepping in and filling that void of being a good pass catcher. When [TE John] Bates has been thrown the ball, he's done a good job with it. Everyone knows what he's capable of doing in the running game and pass protection, but we love all our tight ends. But yeah, definitely missing Logan out there.”
Having a good tight end is pivotal for all offenses and can be even more important for young quarterbacks. Thomas fits that bill for Howell, who has only made four starts in the NFL.
Through two games, Thomas has six catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. Cole Turner has seven catches for 73 yards through three games, while John Bates has five catches for 58 yards.
While Thomas' presence wouldn't have flipped the game on its head, he certainly wouldn't have hurt Washington's chances against the Bills. Howell's rapport with Thomas may have helped him avoid crucial mistakes.
After being limited in practice on Wednesday, Thomas has a shot to return this Sunday when the Commanders head to Lincoln Financial Field to face the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles (3-0) at 1 p.m.
