Commanders Sign Bobby Wagner; What's Next for Jamin Davis?
This offseason, the Washington Commanders hired Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to be the team’s next head coach and signed veteran linebacker Bobby, but how does that affect the rest of the defense?
General manager Adam Peters has now revealed what signing Wagner could mean for the future of linebacker Jamin Davis.
“We still haven't talked through the fifth-year option yet with myself and [Head Coach Dan Quinn] DQ,” Peters said. “But I think, I mean, you play with three linebackers, right? And so, I think Jamin has a great skill set, and I think learning from a guy like Bobby is going to be invaluable to any linebacker. And so we're going to try to get the best 11 on the field at all times, and that's DQ's job and he's a master at that, at finding different personnel groupings. So, however, we can get a really good defense on the field. That's what he's going to do.”
Davis was drafted No. 19 overall back in 2021 after starting just 11 games during his time at Kentucky, but the former Wildcat has underwhelmed through his first three seasons, failing to record 90 or more combined tackles in two of his first three seasons.
The hope is that Wagner can help Davis unlock some of the upside that the Commanders' front office envisioned for him when the team drafted him in the first round three years ago and make him worth extending. For now, it looks as though the team is still waiting for him to prove himself and earn a longer tenure in Washington.
