Commanders Sign CB Danny Johnson to New Deal: Details
The Washington Commanders' first move in the free agency tampering period is a small one, but truly helps solidify the depth in the special teams and secondary.
According to ESPN's John Keim, the Commanders are re-signing cornerback Danny Johnson on a new deal.
NFL Network is reporting that Johnson's deal is for two years and he can make up to $7 million with $2.75 million guaranteed.
Johnson, 27, has spent his entire five-year career in Washington since the team signed him as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft.
This past season, Johnson played in 11 games for the Commanders, drawing four starts and recording a career-high 29 tackles. Johnson played 44 percent of snaps on defense this season, proving himself to be a key role player for Washington's secondary alongside Kendall Fuller and Benjamin St-Juste.
Even with the move to bring back one of their cornerbacks, the Commanders are expected to make more moves at the position this offseason.
Many cornerbacks have been linked to the Commanders early in mock drafts, most notably Illinois' Devon Witherspoon, Penn State's Joey Porter Jr. and Oregon's Christian Gonzalez, though the latter has been rising in recent weeks and could likely be off the board by the time Washington is on the clock with pick No. 16.
