Commanders & Kareem Hunt: Sign for Chiefs Reunion with Coach Eric Bieniemy?
With the door seemingly shut on running back Kareem Hunt returning to the Cleveland Browns, could a reunion with Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy be in the cards?
According to Cleveland.com, the Browns aren’t interested in re-signing Hunt because of his decline in speed. Hunt averaged 3.8 yards a carry, running for 423 yards and three touchdowns on 123 attempts.
He also found himself behind Browns running back Nick Chubb, the NFL’s No. 3 leading rusher, as he ran for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Hunt, 27, began his career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, when Bieniemy was the team’s running backs coach. Hunt ran for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns in his first year, finishing just behind New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
In 2018, Bieniemy’s first year as Kansas City’s offensive coordinator, Hunt ran for 824 yards and seven touchdowns on 181 carries in 11 games. Hunt also averaged 14.5 yards per reception, finishing the season with 378 receiving yards and seven touchdowns receptions. Hunt’s season came to an abrupt halt when the Chiefs cut him due to an incident off the field.
Bieniemy got the best out of Hunt in their two years together in Kansas City. While Hunt likely won’t be able to regain that form, a chance to team up with Bieniemy and platoon with Brian Robinson Jr. alongside Antonio Gibson could potentially get the best of what’s left in his career.
