Should Commanders Trade for Buccaneers LB Devin White?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White is seeking a trade. Could his new team be the Washington Commanders?
In this story:

Several teams are likely calling the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after ESPN reported that linebacker Devin White has requested a trade.

White, 25, the No. 5 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has been a key piece of the Buccaneers defense for the first four years of his career.

Now playing on a fifth-year option, White either wants a new contract or a team that would be willing to sign him.

Could that team be the Washington Commanders?

The Commanders certainly could use an upgrade at the linebacker position. After losing Cole Holcomb in free agency to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team signed Cody Barton away from the Seattle Seahawks. Barton is expected to start for the Commanders this season, but White would be a significant upgrade.

However, trading for White and signing him to an extension is not all roses and rainbows.

The Commanders are already facing a problem with contracts, looking to pay one of either Montez Sweat or Chase Young. Sweat is playing on his fifth-year option for 2023, while the Commanders will look to make a decision on Young's contract by May 1.

Adding White into the mix will only create more problems. After signing Jonathan Allen, Terry McLaurin and Daron Payne to pricey long-term extensions, the team is running out of room for large contracts that White would command.

Perhaps the Commanders could make a blockbuster trade by sending Sweat or Young to the Buccaneers for White, but the chances of that happening are rather slim.
