Commanders Training Camp Notebook: Offense Struggles On Eve of Ravens Joint Practices

With the most competitive practices of the year coming up the Washington Commanders' offense will have much to prove against the Baltimore Ravens starting Tuesday.
In this story:

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Commanders offense did fairly well in their one preseason contest so far in a 17-15 win over the Cleveland Browns

It was a pleasant turn from more down days than up during training camp going up against the Commanders' defense expected to be near or in the top 10 this season.

On Monday, the pads returned to practice and the Washington offense was forced to snap back to reality.

NOT-SO-FRIENDLY FIRE

The Commanders slowed the pace a bit on Sunday to start the week before ramping things back up Monday ahead of joint practices in Baltimore the next two days.

While Washington's defense got back to business fairly quickly the same can't be said for the offensive side of things as consistent pressure and dropped passes plagued the unit throughout practice.

At one point assistant head coach and offensive coordinator could be overheard telling his first unit, "You're a f'ing embarrassment!" while sending them off the field.

HOWELL WATCH

Quarterback Sam Howell went 6-for-10 on pass attempts in 11-on-11 team drills Monday with an interception thrown over the head of tight end Cole Turner and into the waiting arms of safety Jeremy Reaves.

It was Howell's third interception in 11s this training camp, which is generally a good number, but given the context of the day, it was just another note to write down on a day the offense will want to put behind them quickly.

In fact, Day 15 may have been his most inaccurate day so far with several passes either sailing high or behind the intended target.

Thankfully, it's one day, and there's bound to be a bad one in the bunch.

INJURY UPDATES

Tight end Logan Thomas continued to miss practices due to a calf injury suffered earlier in camp and at this point, we're not sure it'd be wise to expect the veteran to return ahead of Monday night's preseason game.

Cornerback Benjamin St-Juste was also absent from practice Monday and coach Ron Rivera says he's dealing with an ankle issue.

Meanwhile, defensive end Chase Young (stinger) and defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis (calf) continued to get limited work, sitting out the bulk of team and position drills.

During practice, right guard Sam Cosmi appeared to injure his right leg and left to the medical tent for a short period before eventually returning to individual and team drills.

In this middle portion of training camp, it's easy for players to find themselves in a rut, but with joint practices coming the next two days the spirit of competition should find a way to pull Washington out of any it may be in.

If not, then it'll be a long two days in Baltimore for the Commanders.
